Hag stones are believed to have magical properties and to be able to mysteriously ward off evil. The theory goes that only good things can pass through a hole, so while good fortune and good wishes will find you through a hag stone, bad luck and evil thoughts are too big to pass through the hole and become stuck in the middle. This belief may be bolstered by the centuries-old belief that magic cannot work on moving water. So, since the hole in a hag stone was created by moving water, it works as a shield.
I found this stone in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico during my first time visiting. It has energy. I drew 4 tarot cards to inspire which archetypes would be portrayed through this series. I drew a card for healing, the pursuit of knowledge, being a creator and a lover. When I turned the stone in different ways, the essence of those archetypes were revealed to me. By switching the totems on the easel in my window every couple of weeks, I used this series throughout my Senior year for inspiration and direction.
